Tokyo, Japan

The last time I stepped foot in Japan was nearly exactly two years ago. I went with the Japanese skincare brand Kanebo and can only recall amazing memories. I was absolutely thrilled when they invited me–and this time with Maria and 4 other influencers (Emily, Olivia, Cindy, and Sasya)–for another exciting trip with the team!

This trip was divided into two: work and play. First half was work–three days of learning more about the company, visiting the labs and factories, talking to the scientists, and diving deep into Kanebo’s rich history. Second  half was play--Maria and I took the liberty of taking 6 days off for our own  mini-vacation and explored Tokyo and nearby Hitachi on our terms (I mean, how could we not?!). This post will be dedicated to the first half of the trip! Read all about the second half on the next post…

We arrived in Tokyo and straight away visited Kanebo HQ. After a few of hours learning more about the history of the brand, we hopped on a bus to Hakone; an idyllic town two hours away. Once there, we were surrounded by spellbinding natural beauty of picturesque forests and high mountains. Instantly we felt worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We checked into Hoshino Resorts KAI Hakone, a gorgeous luxury boutique property situated alongside the Sukumo river. Our room had the most incredible view! Oh, and did I mention that Hakone is also known for its natural hot springs? What better place for Maria and I to have our first Japanese onsen experience!

As much as we hated leaving the resort, the next day we checked out and made our way to Odawara where we paid a visit to COCOLAB and factory–the highly impressive and vigilantly protected compound where Kanebo products are formulated, produced, and packed for distribution. COCOLAB is such a cool interactive exhibition where visitors have the chance to learn more about some of the cutting-edge technology used behind Kanebo skincare products. What made it an even more unforgettable experience was directly meeting with the skincare and perfume scientists themselves. One of them actually explained to us how he formulated one of Kanebo’s best selling lotions and even gave us a step-by-step tutorial! In addition to that, the girls and I created our own custom aromas, using key notes the brand uses, and were able to take the sachets home with us. What a lovely little souvenir. :)

Following the COCOLAB and factory visit was probably one of my favorite parts of the Kanebo trip (if not my favorite): Flower bouquet arranging class at Yoyogi Park! An afternoon sitting on a blanket underneath the trees, surrounded by flowers, at one of Tokyo’s charming parks. What’s not to love?? I was in my element.

The next day us girls got to enjoy a relaxing spa and makeover session before we got back to business and shot our very special photoshoot at the New Otani Tokyo Hotel. Everyone got together to shoot for the new Kanebo Indonesia window display campaign. The  photos will be used as the window display images at Kanebo outlets across Jakarta–they’ll be released and showcased sometime in August or September. How exciting!

Finally, the visit ended with a beautiful farewell dinner in Ropponggi with the whole team!

I have worked with this brand for about three years now and, along with everything they do, I’m always blown away by how impressive and impeccably planned their media trips are. Thank you for choosing us to be part of the Indonesian team. Honor is ours! :)
